Synergy’s Fortunate 5 initiative is designed to fulfill Synergy’s vision of “Bridging the educational divide in India by making education accessible and affordable for underprivileged children”.

Under the initiative, 5 meritorious students coming from economically disadvantaged families who have completed their 10th grade, and want to pursue a career in science are selected, and given a 2 year 100% fee waiver program at one of Synergy’s centres. This includes:

The selection criteria for Fortunate 5 is a 3 step process

If you are a student or know any student who is deserving and can benefit from the program, kindly get in touch.
If you are a school / college and want to collaborate with us to help your students through this program, we will love to partner, kindly get in touch.

Life changing story of our Fortunate 5 Student – Arun Hasabi

“Measure the perimeter of your book, without using a ruler or any measuring instrument” !!

This was the first question that was asked in the first class to a bunch of 11th Grade students to make them realise the importance of standard units(Metric System) in Science.
There were all kinds of creative answers, Perimeter is equal to — 6 Cello Pen; 20 Eraser length; 5 handspans and so on. All students gave such interesting answers, except 1 student, who couldn’t give any answer. It was surprising, Initially it seemed that maybe that particular student was not so creative, but on closer look, it was figured that the student couldn’t answer because he didn’t know the meaning of the word “Perimeter”.
Arun had studied in Kannada Medium all his life, and suddenly he was supposed to grasp everything – Classes, Notes, Books, Assignments, Test questions in English. We wondered, if understanding Perimeter is difficult because of lack of english knowledge, how difficult to explain and understand would be all complicated scientific terms and concepts to follow, whose english terms he was completely unaware of, and kannada translation we were unaware of. How would a 15 year old manage such a big change, let alone competing with lakhs of privileged students in India?
As time passed, based on the questions he asked and reasoning he gave, we understood Arun is no ordinary student. His in-depth understanding and critical thinking were excellent. However, his performance in tests were average at best. At first, we attributed it to lack of english understanding, but the problem was much bigger and deeper. As all other English medium students found it easy to understand, he found it difficult to relate. A fear started in him, a fear that he doesn’t have what it takes, a fear that he is inferior and english superior, a fear that English = Intelligence.
It was not the lack of english knowledge which was truly hurting him, it was his thought of downgrading himself because he thought english is necessary for success. To rekindle his belief in himself, we started delivering all our lectures in hindi(which he was much more comfortable with). Moreover, we started making fun of english language in the class. Too much that, he started feeling that he is superior and english inferior. In the next 2 years, the improvement and growth in Arun’s performance is something which we have not seen in over thousands of students across 3 cities. Not just he improved himself, he easily surpassed all expectations, and went to study in one of the best colleges in the country.
What changed? The books, notes, tests remained to be in english. What changed was his focus and how he felt about himself. Where focus goes, Energy flows.
Earlier he was too focused on his weaknesses, and made himself feel small.
Later he focused on his strengths, made himself feel big and all other problems small.

Arun is currently Pursuing B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Surathkal.
